TLANTA (AP) — The Mets held on to defeat the Atlanta Braves 8-7 on Monday night. DJ Stewart gave New York the lead with a two-run home run in the eighth inning, while Brandon Nimmo drove in five runs with four hits, including two home runs.
The Mets, who have won four of their last five games, ended Atlanta’s winning run of three games on the evening that Atlanta commemorated the 50th anniversary of Hank Aaron’s historic seventieth home run.
Nimmo started the game with a.103 average and no home runs.
According to Nimmo, “it feels good for some of those to fall where they can’t catch them.”
It was satisfying. It doesn’t imply that I’ve solved the problem and that the upcoming game will be fantastic.
With his fifth home run of the year, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves tied Tyler O’Neill and Mookie Betts for the most in the majors.
With one out in the eighth, Pierce Johnson (2-1) allowed Brett Baty to reach base single-handed, but Stewart’s first home run of the year cleared the center field wall to break a 5-all tie. Prior to the home run, Stewart was 0 for 10 this season.
Regarding Stewart’s home run, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented, “It meant a lot.” “He’s one of those people who works hard but doesn’t see results.”
Matt Olson doubled off Mets right-hander Jorge López to start the ninth inning. Ozuna hit a drive that Jeff McNeil grabbed at the left-field wall, moving Olson to third. Michael Harris II singled to right field, setting up Olson to cut the New York advantage to 8-7. Travis d’Arnaud lined out to right field, allowing Orlando Arcia to pop out and giving López his first save.
In the eighth inning, Ozzie Albies was given a walk by Mets right-hander Drew Smith with bases loaded. Austin Riley’s ground ball put Smith out of the inning.
In his Mets debut, right-hander Julio Teheran lasted just 2 and a third innings while giving up four runs. On Friday, Teheran, 33, joined New York. 2011 saw him start his career with Atlanta, and in 2014 and 2016, he was an All-Star for the Braves.
After Albies hit a two-run double off Teheran in the third, the margin was increased to 4-0 thanks to a home run by Ozuna that traveled 442 feet to left field.
