The Pittsburgh Steelers have now completed their quarterback depth chart. Numerous sources, including ESPN Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor, claim that former Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Allen and the Steelers have reached an agreement.
Allen has six years of NFL experience. In 2018, he made his NFL debut as an undrafted free agent. He played for the Carolina Panthers for his first two seasons before spending the next two with the Washington Commanders. He played for the Houston Texans in 2022 and finished the previous season as Josh Allen’s backup in Buffalo.
Allen’s record in 19 career starts is 7–12. In his career, he has completed 4,734 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
When you consider that the Steelers signed Patrick Queen or Russell Wilson, their moves paled in comparison. The addition of Watkins to the roster only serves to increase competition among wide outs 4,5, and 6, while Allen’s deal provides the Steelers with a backup quarterback in the event of an injury. For a spot on the final 53-man roster, he will go off against Dez Fitzpatrick, Keilahn Haris, Ven Jefferson, Denzel Mims, and Duece Watts.
Considering their lack of additional audacious moves—signing Tyler Boyd, trading for Brandon Aiyuk, if that rumor ever had any merit—and the fact that they failed to acquire a center, they will have few options for centers moving forward.
We have to presume they will select a wide receiver and a center with their first two draft picks after Mike Tomlin revealed in a recent interview that they would consider selecting a wide out.
