NEW YORK The Yankees are clearly in the throes of a June slump, as seen by the atmosphere inside their almost silent visiting clubhouse on Wednesday night at Citi Field. They had just suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, falling to the Mets 12-2. This was another crushing setback for them.
With his head up high and his chest protruding, Aaron Judge confidently declared that a Subway Series sweep was “just two games” away. He was standing in front of his locker.
That was evident from the moment Aaron Boone poked at a postgame salad in the manager’s office a few doors down. It was obvious that the salad would have tasted better had his team won the game. It’s “been a crappy two weeks for us,” said Boone, who also said that the Yankees need to make some corrections to get out of their current slump.
Let’s look at five players that need to contribute to the Yankees turning around this slump:
Gleyber Torres
After failing to run out a ground ball in the eighth inning on Tuesday, Torres was benched for the game on Wednesday. Boone also hinted that Torres might not play in the series opener against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Thursday. However,
A prime example of the Yankees’ struggles came in the top of the first inning on Tuesday, when they loaded the bases with none out against David Peterson. Torres struck out, as did Alex Verdugo (who has scuffled since a big night at Fenway Park last week) and J.D. Davis. Batting .215 overall but with two hits in his past 29 at-bats, Torres said, “I know I’m a guy that can do a better job right now,” adding that he needs to make adjustments in all aspects of his game.
“We have to work to get him rolling,” Boone said. “When he’s going like we’ve seen him go, he’s a really important piece to the lineup.”
